Our Curriculum

IB Philosophy

The preschool educational philosophy is that of the Primary Years Program (PYP). The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) aims to develop critical thinking and research skills. This curriculum recommends that all educators become active, competitive, lifelong learners who are open-minded and willing to understand that everyone is entitled to a point of view.

The Primary Years Program (PYP) develops the character of the child and allows the child to achieve a balance between 10 IB learner profiles.  The IB works to shape the child to become respectful, more independent, self-aware, disciplined, and to understand other perspectives, rights and feelings.

In order to shape his behavior through the IB environment, natural and logical methods are used.  Such methods present the child with the correct direction, and behavior is shaped so that the child models the following learner profiles:

  • Inquirer
  • Thinker
  • Communicator
  • Principled
  • Caring
  • Open-minded
  • Knowledgeable
  • Risk-taker
  • Reflective
  • Balanced

Educational Vision

The preschool educational vision is to create a community based on respect, individual differences, problem solving, and cooperation.

We aim to have all students in our school feel secure and safe. We emphasize that bullying, name calling, and acts of violence are unacceptable. We encourage students to share and respect one another while learning and playing.

Classrooms / Setting

KFS PYP Preschool has 9 homeroom classrooms, with 2 KG1 classes, 3 KG2 classes and 4 KG3 classes.  Each class has two teachers, an English and an Arabic teacher.  Classes are distinguished by fruits: Cherry and Orange for KG1, Mango, Apple and Banana for KG2 and Pineapple, Grapes, Kiwi and Strawberry for KG3.  Class size is a maximum of 22 students.

Students rotate between the English and Arabic classes daily and receive a 50% Arabic language teaching and 50% English instruction.  English and Arabic teachers and specialists (Art, IT, Drama, Life Skills and PE) work together to ensure that the foundation years are strong for all students.  Classrooms have many centers in them to appeal to the many intelligences and interests of the students:  Math, Science, blocks, language, drama and other centers are a part of the set-up.  Students enjoy morning circle time and are often called to the circle to learn new concepts.

Smart Boards

All PYP Preschool classrooms are equipped with Smart Boards to ensure that students are gaining 21st century technology skills

Teaching Aids

Many resources are available to ensure the strong teaching and learning experiences.  Students have access to books, computers, science, math, and language resources.  The classrooms are filled with resources and manipulatives that support learning.  These resources are regularly updated to ensure that Units of Inquiry have all of the resources needed for successful learning experiences and student growth.

Internet Coverage

All classrooms are equipped with computers, projectors and internet access.  Such access is of utmost importance to support student curiosity and inquiry learning.

Resource Room

The KFS Preschool has devoted a resource room with a resource person in charge to ensure that all supplies, books, reference books, teaching aids and materials are available to the teachers and that these resources support the Units of Inquiry.

Sports Facilities and Playgrounds

The Preschool has many playgrounds to encourage students to learn through play and to strengthen their physical stamina.  Students have a rotating schedule to visit the many playgrounds (1 indoor, 2 outdoor, and a sand playground) to experience all of the playgrounds regularly.
